"What a photograph depicts has been; what a painting depicts comes into being in the picture. What a movie depicts can, in each of its details, be said to have been: each thing we see must have been there before the camera, which has no imagination and 'infinite appetite for the material'. But the movie as a whole, the world of the movie, comes into being on the screen. What has been is documentary, what comes into being is fiction; a movie is a fiction made up of documentary details. The camera doesn't make things up, it receives their light from reality; but the projector has its own light. One camp of film theory , the camp that stresses photographic realism, subordinates the projector to the camera' documentary image; the other camp, the camp that stresses fantasy and the imaginary, sbordinates the camera to the projector's illusory image. But the film image is both the camera's and the projector's: the material ghost"

índex, ícone, presença, representação... cada vez mais a oposição Macmahonista de um cinema da fascinação ( leia-se artifício) oposto a um cinema ontologia ( leia-se: um dar a ver ao mundo) me parece regresisva, devidamente resolvida ( aufhehoben) pela obra de modernistas como Rivette, Cassavetes ou Kiarostami...
